Now in its sixth year, the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival on Clearwater Beach has long been the passion project of organizer Lisa Chandler.
This year, 11 sculptors from all over the world — including Japan, Mexico, and the Netherlands — are showing off their artistic skills by taking the 1,000 pounds of fine-grained white sand and turning it into elaborate structures ranging from famous faces and animals to historic landmarks.
“We’ve worked really hard to promote this to those in the Tampa Bay area,” Chandler said. Since the festival’s fourth year, she has seen an influx of visitors from Orlando and even farther away. “People are coming from all over the United States,” she said. “It’s really about marketing the destination.”
Clearwater Beach has already been hailed as the No. 1 beach in the country and No. 7 in the world by travel website, TripAdvisor. Condé Nast Traveler also recently named Clearwater Beach to its list of the 15 best beaches in Florida this year.
The festival is “really to showcase what we consider to be our No. 1 asset — the sand,” Chandler said. “We’ve brought it to life in a way that is extremely visual.”
The theme this year is “Sea America: A Celebration of America’s Treasures,” in celebration of monuments around the United States and pop culture. The main attraction of the 10-day festival is the Sugar Sand Walk Exhibit housed inside a 21,000 square-foot tent. “It takes two weeks to build the exhibit,” Chandler said, who noted that Team Sandtastic was commissioned for the job.
Last year, the festival had more than 40,000 visitors to the exhibit itself, while there were 116,000 guests over the 10-day period, Chandler said.
Run by Sunset of Pier 60, a not-for-profit organization, the festival began April 13 and will run through April 22. It was closed on Sunday due to inclement weather. There are several free activities over the course of the festival including free concerts, four nights of fireworks and free sand sculpting classes in which guests can learn from the artists.

Three new sculptures have been added to the Cleveland Street District.
They are the latest edition of city’s Sculpture 360 program, which is a rotating display of art that changes each year on Cleveland Street.
Business owners like Clayton Irwin, who owns the Lucky Anchor Irish Pub, say the artwork helps bring in customers and gives them a pleasant atmosphere.
“They really make a difference on the main strip here. I think they look really, really good,” Irwin said.
The sculpture in front of his business is called Influx. It was created by local artist Ceclia Lueza, who designed it just for Clearwater.
“I’ve been noticing a lot of foot traffic by it. A lot of people taking pictures next to it,” Irwin said.
Clearwater spokesman Jason Beisel says the rotating art gives the area a unique look that gives visitors something to look at and talk about.
“About every year and a half or so, the city puts out a call for artists to get their ideas for what artwork they want to replace it with,” Beisel said. “This is the 8th season for this exhibit.”
The three artists of these sculptures are all from the Tampa Bay area. Marlene Rose designed “Eternity Relic” and Gus and Lina Ocamposilva designed “Dancer of the Wind.”
The sculptures will be on display until December 2018.

The Don CeSar Hotel on St. Pete Beach was recently named on a list of the “Best Historic Hotels” by USA Today.
The 277-room “Pink Palace,” which has been an icon on St. Pete Beach for decades, was built in 1928. The hotel was recognized by USA Today for its history and restoration. It ranked No. 7 on USA Today’s Top 10 list. The No. 1 historic hotel was the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich.
USA Today employed a panel of experts to pick the initial 20 nominees. The top 10 winners were then determined by a popular vote, according to a press release.
In 2015, the Don CeSar was named the “Best Historic Hotel” in its size category by the Historic Hotels of America organization. Historic Hotels of America, which was founded in 1989, is an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It recognizes more than 260 historic hotels in the U.S., Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Host Hotels & Resorts purchased the Don CeSar for $202.6 million earlier this year. Prudential Insurance had been the majority owner of the historic 277-room hotel on St. Pete Beach for more than 12 years, and Loews Hotels managed the property and owned a 20 percent stake.
The hotel is now managed by Davidson Hotels & Resorts.
“The Don” has taken many forms over the years. In the 1940s it served as a hospital for the U.S. Army throughout the duration of World War II. Not long after, the building was turned into a regional office for the Veteran’s Administration.
USA Today ranks a variety of tourist destinations every year. Clearwater Beach was named the No. 2 best beach in Florida last year and in 2013 it was deemed the No. 1 best beach town by USA Today.
